National Finals Rodeo (NFR), organized by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) is commonly called the World Series of Rodeo or the Super Bowl of Rodeo. The NFR is sponsored by Wrangler Jeans and is considered one of the premier events in the United States to showcase the talents of the PRCA’s top 15 money-winners in each event as they all vie for the world title each December, at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas
That’s because the 58-year-old, 18-time world steer roping champion has become stricter about what he swallows these days. And perhaps that’s one reason he’s had the energy to qualify for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s National Finals Steer Roping this season.
The last time Allen qualified for the National Finals Steer Roping was in 2008. His comeback has been one of the more heart-warming pro rodeo stories of the year.
As he pursued a National Finals berth, Allen closely has watched what he’s drank, he said, although he admits he should have better controlled what he’s eaten.
“I’ve cut out soda pops and I just drink water,” Allen said. “I think I had one glass of tea this year and that was with (eight-time world champion) Roy Cooper after he insisted.”
Allen hopes his more disciplined lifestyle will help him finish in the money at high-profile competitions such as San Angelo’s Roping Fiesta. He is scheduled to compete in the Invitational steer roping competition on Sunday, Oct. 30.
