Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Live 2017 cracks down on security PRCA

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – In order to enhance public safety and make venue access more efficient at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Las Vegas Events recently announced it will implement a new security policy regulating the size and type of bag that may be carried into the Thomas & Mack Center.

National Finals. Mandan’s Ty Breuer left on Monday for Las Vegas, and the NFR begins Thursday.

This is the second time Breuer has qualified for the Finals. In 2013, Ty was in the top-15 after the regular season. Some injuries and a couple of years in between, but he goes into the NFR ranked 12th in the World in Bareback Standings which was a little close to the cut line.

“I don’t like i – I’d rather be higher that’s for sure. It was one of the years when I was healthy all year, but it’s probably one of my tougher years too. When I went to a lot more rodeo’s and didn’t win any big rodeos this year, just kind of placed at quite a few and there was some that were major points like Reno at the beginning of the year but other than that it was kind of a long year, and I’m excited to go to the Finals,” says Breuer.

The clear bag policy will begin Dec. 7 and continue for the duration of the event, which culminates Dec. 16.

“Following the NFL’s lead, along with other professional and collegiate programs, we believe it is prudent to implement the clear bag policy,” said LVE President Pat Christenson. “Fan safety, security and enjoyment is a top priority for us. We believe this policy is an important enhancement to the security measures already put in place at the Thomas & Mack Center

Teens like Dillon Jacobs and Kaycie Ahlstrom were climbing on horses when they were still in diapers, and that passion may pay off in the form of state titles this week.

“I started riding as soon as I could walk,” said Ahlstrom, a senior from Rush Valley. “My dad and his parents, they all did it. I just kind of grew up around it.

She rode in peewee rodeos from the time she was five, while Jacobs, an Emery High junior was learning the art of riding a bucking horse when a lot of boys his age were contemplating a bike without training wheels.

Both teens are among the 365 participants in this year’s Utah State High School Finals Rodeo that begins Wednesday and runs through Saturday at the Wasatch County Fairgrounds.

Dillon is in fourth place headed into the state finals, which means he has a very good shot at not only a state title, but also at making the Utah team that will compete at Nationals in July. He’s so close to his first trip to Nationals that he’s not going to participate in bull riding, even though he’s qualified to do so.

“Because I’ve been spending my time practicing riding barebacks, I felt like I didn’t want to jeopardize that by riding bulls,” he said.

The person chosen to sing the anthem in front of crowds of rodeo enthusiasts is chosen annually by competition.

Over a hundred hopefuls submit auditions, like the one on the screen, and voters along with judges narrow them down to eight.

“I happen to be one of those top eight individuals,” commented Jessica Cason.

Cason is a woman hailing from Ballinger. When she got the news, to say she was excited would be an understatement.

“I’m calling everyone I know, my husband, my mother in law, my mom, my dad and telling everyone sending out texts.”

“We are excited about something new and on a weekend where typically there is not a lot of events going on,” said Matt McLean, director of the Marshfield Convention & Visitors Bureau.

McLean said former Central Wisconsin State Fair director Adam Fischer had a relationship with the CBRA, and the association had wanted to move the event from Iowa. Marshfield was one of the bids selected to host the national finals events

It was McBride’s mom Julie Bishop, a former rodeo queen herself, who encouraged McBride to consider the world of rodeo queening.
“When I finally decided to try it, it was love at first sight,” McBride said. “I began going for every contest I could find.

After high school, McBride moved to Logandale to live with her dad, Jim Blasingame. She became fully immersed in the rodeo queen world, competing in contests all over the state.
Even so, to McBride, the title of Miss Rodeo Nevada seemed a distant dream. “I never thought I’d have the personality for the public speaking and interview portion of the contests,” she said.

In order to gain those skills, McBride entered every local contest she could to gain skills she would need. Of course, these had to be sandwiched between her work at UNLV, where she is studying business management.

This year the time was right and she competed as part of the 60th anniversary of the Miss Rodeo Nevada celebration. McBride said the event was everything she dreamed it would be.
McBride’s whole family was there when she won. “It was so surreal having the crown placed on my hat,” she said. “It was the achievement of a huge goal and every time I’ve worn it since, I get that feeling again.”

The women’s all-around race got very exciting for Samantha Jorgensen from black Hills State University. Jorgensen, a senior in business administration got close to the arena record with a 1.9-second run on June 14. The record of 1.8 seconds was set in 2001 by Tarleton State University’s Jill Childers. There was no time to celebrate her success in the breakaway.

McGhee wasn’t the only Sam Houston athlete to win a national championship, breakaway roper Loni Lester came from second overall to win the title when she clocked a time of 2.7 seconds in the championship round. She won the championship round by three-tenths of a second, after a combined four runs. Lester, a junior from Gonzales, Texas, was also named Womens All-Around Champion.

In the tie down roping, Tarleton State University senior Reid Zapalac vaulted into first place among tie down ropers Tuesday, and stayed at the top of the leader board, finishing the week out at 36.7 seconds after four rounds.

National Final Rodeo 2016 Live

Thousands of rodeo enthusiasts are converging on Las Vegas beginning this week for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) and, as the Official Truck of the WNFR and Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) for 35 years, the Ram Truck brand will be there.

Ram Truck is bringing several interactive fan experiences to Las Vegas Dec. 1-10 for WNFR, in support of the Ram Rodeo Series. Rodeo and truck fans can take part in numerous activities around the Las Vegas strip, including performances by country music artist Natalie Stoval and the Drive every night, daily autograph signings by various country music artists, nightly WNFR viewing parties, truck displays and a new interactive Ram virtual reality 360 experience.

“Ram is proud to be a part of the Ram Rodeo Series and WNFR for 35 years, as trucks are a must-have vehicle for both those who compete and fans alike,” said Mike Manley, Head of Ram Brand, FCA – Global. “As thousands of rodeo fans take over Las Vegas during WNFR, it is a great opportunity for Ram to showcase the capabilities and best-in-class features of our complete truck lineup of America’s longest lasting pickups.”

National Final Rodeo 2016 Live

Ram trucks play an integral role in the rodeo circuit as cowboys and stock contractors haul their prized horses and livestock across the country every weekend throughout the year, leading up to celebrating their accomplishments at the annual WNFR, the final rodeo event of the PRCA season.

Large crowds are anticipated at shows this rodeo season as an animal rights group acknowledges it has no evidence against the next show off the mark.

South Island rodeo crowd numbers reached record highs earlier this year, with thousands attending the Methven and Winchester rodeos over Labour Weekend.

Rural sports commentator Craig Wiggins said a combined crowd of more than 11,000 people attended the two Canterbury events.

The crowds were “the strongest we’ve ever seen”, Wiggins said.

The crowds swelled even as animal rights group SAFE issued statements ahead of each rodeo calling for people to boycott them.

This week, SAFE issued a statement urging people to “steer clear” of the Waimate Rodeo.

Contacted this week, SAFE campaigns officer Marianne Macdonald acknowledged the group had no evidence of animal mistreatment at the Waimate Rodeo.

She was also unsure as to whether any of the organisation’s local members had ever attended the event.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Buckin’ Bull Party at The Fremont, including the mechanical bull-riding competition and bikini bull-riding, has been cancelled. The Filament bar will still host free NFR viewing parties from now through Dec. 10.

Professional rodeo announcer Jody Carper will lend his voice during the action. All that participants need to bring is their courage as there will be a coach on-site to assist. Contestants can practice their skills during the NFR Viewing Party for just $5 per ride, then buckle up for the competition at 9 p.m. each night.

They will be scored by three special guest judges: Troy Lerwill, the six-time PRCA Comedy Act of the Year winner; Ronald Burton, celebrated rodeo clown and featured participant in the award-winning documentary, “Man in the Can;” and Dennis Halstead, four-time Canadian Professional Rodeo Entertainer of the Year. The top three scorers will receive $500 in prizes and a championship buckle each session. Plus, don’t miss bikini bull-riding, Dec. 3-4 and Dec. 10-11, after the Buckin’ Bull Party contest concludes.

After “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” put the launch of the DC/Warner Bros. universe on shaky ground, the studio came back swinging at Comic-Con Saturday armed with movie stars, brand new footage and a sense of humor.

The 6,500-some fans in Hall H got a glimpse of never-before-seen footage from the superhero all-star film “Justice League ” from director Zack Snyder, as well as the action-packed first trailer for “Wonder Woman ,” starring Gal Gadot.

Snyder and the cast flew in from London to tease “Justice League,” which is currently in production and not set to hit theaters until November 2017.

The lively “Justice League” footage highlights Bruce Wayne’s recruitment of what will be the Justice League team, including The Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa). Ben Affleck, who plays Bruce Wayne/Batman, hyped the film with his fellow cast mates, including Gadot and Superman actor Henry Cavill — putting to bed any lingering suspicions that his character was actually killed off for good at the end of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The Green Bay Packers will have 326 consecutive home sellouts by the end of this season, in a streak dating to 1960, and that doesn’t count playoff games. In college football, Nebraska reached 355 home sellouts this year, going almost as far back as the Pack, to 1962.

But make no mistake, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is right up there with the best of them. The first go-round of the 2016 WNFR rides at 6:45 p.m. Friday at the Thomas &Mack Center, setting off another run of 10 sold-out nights that will bring the Super Bowl of Rodeo’s streak to an even 300.

“When the WNFR moved in, we knew we were on to something,” said Pat Christenson, president of Las Vegas Events, which operates the WNFR, working in conjunction with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

It took a couple of years for that “on to something” to really take hold, but since 1987, every night of the WNFR has been a sellout.

ALTON Downs cowboy Shane Iker has recorded five placings in The Carlton Dry Warwick Rodeo National Finals to win the All Around Cowboy title in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.

Iker won All Around Championships in 2008 and 2014 so made it three titles in eight years with his victory in Warwick at the weekend.

Iker joined with Charters Towers rider Liam Davison to record a win, second and third in team roping at the National Finals to finish second in the average. Iker secured the team roping header title narrowly from Griffith (NSW) rider Heath Litchfield. The All Around Champion also recorded a second and third in the rope and tie.

Millmerran rider John McNamee finished the season on top of the standings in saddle bronc and narrowly won the title from Springsure rider Allan Powell who won two rounds in Warwick. Powell won the average which is determined by the highest total score over the four rounds of the finals. McNamee won the Saturday night round with a score of 80.

Defending champion David Worsfold from Wandoan retained the bareback bronc riding title with two round wins and also won the finals average. Cameron’s Corner rider Fred Osman won the other two rounds.

Peebles rode for 83.5 points on Pete Carr’s Classic Pro Rodeo’s Good Time Charlie to split the Round-10 win and move ahead of four-time World Champion Kaycee Feild by $10,523 after Feild failed to earn a check aboard Frontier Rodeo’s Times Up.

“I tried not to get any butterflies before I got on my horse, and I wanted to have a lot of energy and fight,” Peebles said. “I stared at the horse and just kept saying to myself, ‘He isn’t faster than me. He isn’t faster than me.'”

The horse was just the right speed for Peebles, who was simply thankful to be alive and competing in Las Vegas. He almost lost his life in July after suffering a broken rib that nicked an artery and filled his lungs with blood at the Livingston (Mont.) Roundup. He was rushed to the hospital and made it without a moment to spare as doctors were able to drain his lungs and save his life.

They have the same last name, but are not related.

Yet, bareback bronc riders Tim O’Connell and Shane O’Connell have the same goal for today – winning their first-ever Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo championship.

The 120th finals of the CFD Rodeo starts at 12:15 p.m. today.

Tim O’Connell, from Zwingle, Iowa, is ranked No. 1 in the world standings, but his 164 points on two rides is five points behind leader Orin Larsen of Gering, Nebraska. He has earned a little more than $106,000 this year, and has a $20,000 lead in the world standings. Larsen is in fourth place.

“Everyone wants to be in the driver’s seat going into the finals, especially here at the Dad, but I like where I’m at,” Tim O’Connell said. “There will be 12 great horses out (today), and it’s just going to be a spurring contest. Orin’s one of the best guys in the world, and so are the others. The best guys in the world show up to Cheyenne.

“I’ve been to the short round once, and I’m awful tickled to get back.”

The steer wrestling lead changed hands almost nightly during the 10 rounds of the WNFR, but when the dust settled tonight, Hunter Cure had captured his second gold buckle in three years. Cure – who also won the world title in 2013 – split second place in Round 10 with K.C. Jones with a 3.9-second run to win $18,192. He also moved up to second in the WNFR average with a 52.1-second time on 10 head to capture the gold buckle with $241,515. Dakota Eldridge won the average with 45.6 seconds on 10 head, but finished second in the world with $211,669.

“This was anybody’s ballgame, and it was there for whoever was going to step up and take it,” the 32-year-old Cure, from Holliday, Texas, said. “I felt like my horse (Charlie) had worked great all week long and my hazer (Matt Reeves) did an outstanding job, so I just needed to stay the course and work on my craft and see how it worked out in the end.

In his only other CFD finals appearance, O’Connell said he scored 86 points when he was a rookie in 2013. He said that ride placed him in the middle of the pack.

“The short round is amazing, fun and exciting. I’m blessed to be a part of it again,” Tim O’Connell added. “It’s every kid’s dream to be in the finals in Cheyenne. You don’t hear about San Antonio; Salinas, California; or Nampa, Idaho. All you hear about is Cheyenne and the Daddy of ’em All. It’s a feeling of overwhelming happiness.
