By Wednesday the count was down to five NFR qualifiers and four from the 2009 top 20 qualifier list.

Most of the ones who came were rough stock cowboys ? those who don’t have to haul their horses. These cowboys travel with riding gear only.

So why do the rodeo stars skip Abilene?

It’s mostly a matter of timing and whether the cowboys have already cinched a spot at the national finals.

Trying to predict the actual performers each night from the entry list of 374 contestants for the West Texas Fair & Rodeo is a guessing game.

Contestants have until 5 p.m. the day of each performance to notify the rodeo secretary if they are in or out.

A visible injury or a doctor or vet release is the first out.

If a contestant has made the short go-round finals at an event running at the same time, he is allowed to withdraw.

Another out is if the contestant is “up” at a bigger rodeo, one with a bigger purse.

Add to this the pressure of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s 2009 season ending Oct. 1.
