Twenty-seven-year-old Baylor Roche finished the 2015 season ranked in the Top 10 in steer wrestling.

It was a family sport passed along to Roche and his brother, finding his love for Steer Wrestling in 2005. Roche’s coach, Rod Jones, was the one who first helped him get on his feet, participating in high school rodeos that same year.

Roche went to college at Utah Valley University where he rodeoed for Lewis Field. Just a few years later, he qualified for the 2015 National Finals Rodeo.

But the 23-year-old from Calgary suffered a devastating injury in July — a shattered ankle in nine different places that required surgery and has three plates and 10 screws holding it together.

But Hansen was going to do everything he could to make it back in time for the CFR. Now he’s the 2016 CFR bull riding champion.

“This was my first rodeo back. When I got hurt, I was riding the best I ever had,” said Hansen.

“Right after the surgery, they told me I wasn’t going to be able to ride the rest of the year, but I like to prove doctors wrong. Especially for an event like this. This was one I wasn’t going to miss.”
